Napoli it is an acoustic portrait of the city created in 1993 by Roberto Paci Dalò for the festival “Les Allumées” in Nantes and later presented in numerous cities such as Krakow, Berlin, Vienna, Bologna, Linz, Reggio Emilia and Cologne. It is an installation that evokes a tradition of symbolic and ritual presences, with a sonic spectrum ranging from the noise of the circumvesuviana railway to the songs of street vendors. The radio version of Napoli was part of the official selection of the Prix Italia 1994. The disc is packaged in a carton box with embossed titles; includes a booklet of 38 pages, an insert and a multifolded light slipcase housing the disc.
“The acoustical secrets of the city at various moments of day and night. The soundscape is gathered and approached by approximation. A drift through the meanders of the city’s memory and at the same time an acoustic film without images. Footsteps, voices, screams and invocations, sounds of instruments and machines – of work, of leisure, of transport- . Celebrations at the foot of mount Vesuvius. Stratifications of sonic images in continuous transformation. Gradual and progressive changes based on minimal shifts are traversed by flashes of an acoustic storm that constantly calls into question the interpretation of the signals transmitted. The microphone is at times used as a lens, enlarging particulars, details, sounds that are almost imperceptible. Microlistening and macrolistening intermingle while retaining their own specificities. Not fusion, but a relationship between the materials used. The listener is thus able to immerse themselves in the sonic territory of a city in which acoustic life plays a decisive role. An immersion in the city through the mystery of hearing. Not a representation of Naples, but its absence leads to a desired sense of disorientation.” Roberto Paci Dalò, 1993
