Kol Beck – Living Strings is a radio work commissioned by the Studio Akustische Kunst of WDR in Cologne, first broadcast on 24 September 2005, dedicated and after Julian Beck’s voice (1925–1985). Play excerpt (mp3).
Kol Beck – Living Strings develops the materials of the Beck/ett sound–video installation created at The Western Front Society in Vancouver and presented in Naples in 2003 as part of the exhibition Living Theatre. The voice of Julian Beck and the silences of Beckett create the environment of Beck/ett; the visitor enters an acoustic space composed of phonemes and words. The image is created through the use of video as pure light in motion: the installation thus presents two perceptual levels of equal importance and closely intertwined, namely the acoustic and the optical.
