Doyne is the live performance that Roberto Paci Dalò presented at the opening of the first edition of Sonic Narratives and which is based on the relationship between the traditional doina (typical Romanian folk song, ed.) and live electronics. This work is part of a long-term research on the performance practice of the artist’s preferred instrument: the clarinet. The entire work is dedicated in memory of the late artist Romica Puceanu.
The doina is a traditional Romanian musical genre of folk singing characterized by individual expressiveness, improvisation and free rhythm. It is considered one of the most representative forms of romanian popular musical heritage and, since 2009, has been part of UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is a solo and intimate song, often performed without accompaniment (or with simple instruments such as the pastoral flute or leaves) and is considered a form of inner and psychological expression, a way to “free the soul” (de stâmpărare), similar to a lament. It is a monodic melody (a single melodic line without corroded harmony) often performed by voice alone; the rhythm is free and non-metric.
