Atlas of Emotion Stream

Atlas of Emotion Stream is a black and white cinematographic installation by Roberto Paci Dalò presented at the PAN | Palazzo delle Arti in Naples on the occasion of the project Il sabato delle idee / Lo spazio urbanistico. The installation is freely inspired by the cult book by Giuliana Bruno Atlas of Emotion (Italian version: Atlante delle emozioni). The work is dedicated to the city of Naples and in particular to one of the most dynamic and popular places: the Bar. So present in everyday life that it often goes unnoticed, the Bar is the “volcanic” space through which to access the bowels of the city, following an “emotional itinerary” to be discovered.

Roberto Paci Dalò tells of a singular emotional journey in the Neapolitan city that begins in a place as usual as it is symbolic: the Bar. This is where the quick stays of those who have an espresso coffee coexist, and the equally quick, but repeated stays of those who go there several times during the day. The esoteric steams of the coffee machines, the sound of the cups resting on the saucer, the soft voices of the customers, the continuous overlapping of acoustic flows, make the Bar an “alchemic” place, through which you can access the mysterious and surreal subsoil of Napoli Sotterranea. Atlas of Emotion Stream is also a film and a performance by the artist in live electronics.

Atlas of Emotion by Giuliana Bruno

Sabato delle idee arrives at the PAN on April 18, 2019. After the discussion of the scientific committee on the theme of urban space, the film installation by Roberto Paci Dalò Atlas of Emotion Stream is inaugurated. The work traces a toponymic and topographical itinerary, a true geography of emotions, an experiential map of the Neapolitan city. These suggestions are connected to Giordana Bruno’s successful book, which inspired Dalò’s work. Giuliana Bruno, professor at Harvard University, deals with visual and environmental studies, art, architecture, film and media. His book Atlas of Emotion won the Kraszna-Krausz Moving Image Book Award in 2003. Published by Verso in New York in 2002, it describes experiential geographies for mapping cities. The Italian version, Atlante delle emozioni, was published in 2006 by Mondadori. It tells of a fascinating visual journey in which the author guides the reader through art, architecture and cinema, proposing an affective map of cities, which connects mental landscapes to inner worlds.  Giuliana Bruno creates and names a new category of hermeneutics, that of “emotional geography”, taken up by scholars from all over the world

Sounding landscapes

The sounds of Atlas of Emotion Stream were recorded live and field recorded and then sampled and intertwined with electronic music. Atlas of Emotion Stream voices and soundscapes were recorded with binaural microphones. Binaural recording allows three-dimensional sound reproduction because it preserves the directional characteristics at 360 degrees. The listener’s acoustic perception is therefore very faithful to the acoustics of the original sound environment. The sound environment par excellence in Atlas of Emotion Stream is the Bar, a powerful city acoustic collector where the coffee ritual is performed every day and at any hour. The Bar then becomes the sacred and epiphanic city place because of it.
